Hey Oppo, Its been years since I posted here, but I thought I’d share my most recent poor financial decision. Here she is:
The “Busso” V6 and the manual. I’m one happy Jalop.
The noise. My god, the noise.

Good choice. The Busso is a magical, mighty, musical mythical machine. I loved my 164-S dearly, and still miss it. It was a genuinely great car in nearly every way, including reliability! (as long as you changed the timing belt and tensioner at the required intervals)
May your FWD V6 Alfa Romeo experience be as great as mine was!

Very nice, congratulations.
The red is a fantastic colour too.

Thank you! Yeah, full service history (90% with Alfa specialists), including timing belt done 10,000km ago. Bought off a young bloke who’s old man had two (2!) 156 GTAs in the garage. I’m confident she’
s been looked after.

Was also looking a few years back at them and GTV, good choice !
Is it a 2.5 24V ? Q4?

If its not red, is it really an Alfa Romeo?
Good tip! I’ll investigate.

Not Q4 ( Could you get those as a sedan?), but yes
, the 2.5 24V. It sings!

There was a couple that looked rather tasty in yellow.

More Italian financial disasters is exactly the thing we need!
I don’t have a Busso but I do have a 1750. From what I’ve heard on YouTube they sound good, even a more melodic than today’s QV V6s.
Looking forward to hearing more about your car. Enjoy and stay safe down there.

Thank you for being an automotive masochist and buying this so we can live vicariou sly through Oppo posts.
In all honesty, are these horribly unreliable? I consider these the 2nd best looking modern Alfa’s, behind the 8C.

My research suggests that the Busso is fairly robust, and the manual ‘box is solid. The horror stories tended to come from pre-facelift
(and therefore pre-recall) 4cyl cars with the S
elespeed, or from places where they salt the roads in winter (rusty floorpans are a killer). Down here in NZ that isn’t an issue. I’m hoping she’s reliable, and will keep Oppo informed either way.

The Busso V6 is a very, very good engine. Treat the timing gear with the res pect and regular belt changes it deserves, and it will repay your care with reliable, musical, buttery-smooth power delivery for many, many years. My 164-s had a bit over 400k miles on it when we parted ways due to rear subframe rust and the 2009 economic crash. I kn ow for a fact it ran for at leat three more years as a farm beater car, and would still start and rev and make beautiful noises even after the rear suspension w as totally collapsed from being driven through a corn field at extreme speed.

Praise the Alfa! Ive had three as dailies 81GTV6, 72 GTV2000, 87 75/Milano. Other than needing a jump start, Only the Milano stranded me (insurance paid my tow and rental) after clutch slave went. The Milano used to pass emissions despite hollowed out cats until it didnt. By the time my 08 Lexus GS wears out (never) a modern Guilia should be cheap cash or low payment car. Ive driven an AWD turbo and it is a hoot! You should not be disappointed

Wow, you go way back. I'm so what of a noob so I was interested in some of your older stuff. Welcome back! What a lovely car! I still think those were some of the best looking modern normal cars to come out of the decade and easily some of the best at pulling off the angry eyes look.

Jealous, I love the way the 156 looks. Puts the Giulia to shame honestly

Nice. I bottled out of buying a wagon a few years ago, mostly because the one I was looking at was a Sel espeed, which suck. I’ve always slightly regretted it: they’re a gorgeous looker, and that sound forgives pretty much anything.

A wagon nerely tempted me. A black 2005
V6 manual wagon in Ti trim turned up on Trademe (NZs eBay and graigslist and Bat all rolled in to one) about 3 hours from me. The red sedan
won me over, and although I may have to hand i
n my jalop card for admitting this, I reckon the sedan looks better. One of the only examples, though. I’m usually a wagon fan.
